There are many traditional musical instruments in China. They are well-known for their long history, the beautiful tones they make, and the rich emotions expressed. Here is a list of the top ten traditional Chinese instruments.
Grotto refers to the temples that are built on mountainside or cliffs. It originated in India, where the practice of Buddhist doctrines are affected by the damp and hot climate in the South Asian subcontinent. Therefore, the ancient Indians built their temples and meditation rooms in caves where the summer was cool, and spring was warm. Later, the practice was introduced to China together with Buddhism; Chinese Buddhist disciples learned from the master and continued to build grottoes and caves everywhere.
China is the cradle of the world silk civilization. The ancient Chinese people began to plant mulberry, breed silkworm, and reel silks around 6,000 years ago, creating an early silk civilization and conceiving the rich Chinese silk culture. Silk also become an essential part of Chinese civilization. Since the 4th and 5th centuries, the gorgeous silk productions were spread to Asia, Europe, and Africa through the "Silk Road" and became one of China's symbols.
Chinese embroidery, one of the outstanding traditional Chinese handicraft arts, refers to the needlework made on the fabrics in patterns of colorful characters, animals, or objects. As women make most embroidery works, embroidery is also called Nv Gong (women's work). Chinese embroidery originated from people's need for self-decorating. It is said that the painted patterns appeared as far as in Yellow Emperor's period, which means that the ancient primitive people already knew how to use colors to beautify themselves. It's just they applied paintings directly on their bodies. With the development of silk and fabrics, such painted patterns began to appear on clothes.
Chinese Opera has a long history, and there are about 360 types of local operas all over China. Beijing Opera, Yue Opera, Yu Opera, Ping Opera, and Huangmei Opera are regarded as the five most popular operas in China.
Chinese Opera, the traditional Chinese drama, is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. It also belongs to the three greatest ancient dramas in the world (the other two are the ancient Greek tragicomedy and ancient Indian brahma drama). Thus, the history of China is also the history of Chinese Opera. The origin of the Chinese Opera can be traced back to Qin and Han Dynasties. It takes shape in Song and Yuan Dynasties though. The mature Chinese Opera starts from the Yuan Dynasty. In Ming and Qing Dynasties, it reached the prime times until modern days.
Originated in China, Chinese Porcelain has a history of over 4000 years. The Chinese porcelain was preceded by the primitive celadon, which was developed based on the Chinese pottery. The earliest Chinese porcelain was the primitive celadon excavated in the Dongxia Fenglongshan Cultural Ruins of Shanxi province, dating back to 4200 years ago. Chinese porcelain techniques and skills were much better and more advanced in China's long history, forming a complete porcelain-making system. It became an essential part of Chinese culture.
Chinese Bronze refers to the alloy of pure copper and other chemicals like stannum, plumbum, nickel, and phosphorus. It has a history of 3000 years, spanning from the Xia Dynasty to the Han Dynasty. The Chinese Bronze Vessels are most found from the Bronze Age of China (1500-300 B.C), representing the culture and technology of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou Dynasties. Chinese Bronze Age It refers to the period between the Xia Dynasty (2100 B.C- 1600 B.C.) to the Zhou Dynasty (1046 B.C - 256 B.C.) when bronze techniques were developed, matured, and prospered. The unique formation, exquisite carving patterns, and elegant inscriptions revealed the casting techniques, cultural characteristics, and historical origins of the pre-Qin period. Historians praised the bronze vessels as living records telling Chinese history.
