The Chinese zodiac signs refer to the twelve animals that match the twelve earthly branches. They originated from animal worship in ancient times. According to the Qin dynasty bamboo slips excavated in Yunmeng Shuihudi of Hubei and Fangmatan of Gansu, a relatively complete zodiac system existed in pre-Qin ages (earlier to 221B.C). However, the oldest record identical to the modern 12 zodiac signs is from the book Lun Heng by Wang Chong from the Eastern Han dynasty. How did Chinese zodiac signs come into being?

Zodiac Ox ranks the second in twelve Chinese zodiacs. It matches the Chou in the twelve earthly branches, thus zodiac ox is also referred as Chou Ox (丑牛).
Tiger is the third zodiac in the 12 Chinese zodiacs. It’s associated with the earthly branch Yin (寅), which also corresponds to the hours 3-5 in the early morning. In terms of Yin and Yang, the zodiac Tiger is Yang.
Rabbit is the fourth zodiac in the 12 Chinese zodiacs. It’s associated with the earthly branch Mao (卯), which corresponds to the hours 5-7 in the early morning. In terms of Yin and Yang, the zodiac Rabbit is Yin.
Dragon is the fifth zodiac in the 12 Chinese zodiacs. It’s associated with the earthly branch Chen (辰), which corresponds to the hours 7-9 in the morning. In terms of Yin and Yang, the zodiac Dragon is Yang.
Snake is the sixth zodiac in the 12 Chinese zodiacs. It’s associated with the earthly branch Si (巳), which corresponds to the hours 9-11 in the morning. In terms of Yin and Yang, the zodiac Snake is Yin.
Horse is the seventh zodiac in the 12 Chinese zodiacs. It’s associated with the earthly branch Wu (午), which corresponds to the hours 11-13 at midday. In terms of Yin and Yang, the zodiac Horse is Yang.
Goat is the eighth zodiac in the 12 Chinese zodiacs. It’s associated with the earthly branch Wei (未), which corresponds to the hours 1-3 in the afternoon. In terms of Yin and Yang, the zodiac Goat is Yin.
Monkey is the ninth zodiac in the 12 Chinese zodiacs. It’s associated with the earthly branch Shen (申), which corresponds to the hours 3-5 in the afternoon. In terms of Yin and Yang, the zodiac Monkey is Yang.
