The lucky symbols are an indispensable element in China. People rest their hope and expectations on many auspicious symbols. It's estimated that there are hundreds of lucky symbols in China, including characters, patterns, animals, divine deities, numbers, and others.
Bazi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is an astrological concept used to divine a person’s destiny. The word Bazi literally means “eight characters," which are composed of four pillars (year, month, day, and the hour of a birthday). Each pillar has two characters derived from the heavenly stems and earthly branches, totaling eight characters.
The Chinese Five Elements philosophy is a Taoism system widely practiced in traditional Chinese medicine, Feng Shui, numerology, physiognomy, and fortunetelling. Its meaning covers the five fundamental dynamics of the universe: water, fire, meta, food, and earth. Ancient Chinese philosophers used the Five Elements theory to explain the formation of all things on the planet and their interactive relationships.
Numbers play an important role in Chinese people’s life. Many Chinese people are quite particular about numbers. Some numbers are believed to bring luck to people, while some are not. Combining those lucky numbers are considered more auspicious. Therefore, Chinese people always pay attention to which numbers to choose, especially for special occasions, like buying cars, having wedding ceremonies, buying houses, or picking plate numbers for vehicles and phone numbers.
According to I-ching, ancient Chinese began to count the years by matching the Chinese zodiac and Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches since the 1st century. The years with the same earthly branch match the same zodiac, like Jiashen, Bingshen, Wushen, and Gengshen are all monkey (earthly branch being Shen) years.
