Zodiac Rat
Rat is the first in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. It’s said that a long time along, the Jade Emperor decided to choose twelve animals to represent the human zodiac. He had a competition arranged that the first twelve animals that arrived at the heavenly palace would be selected. The shrewd rat feared that it couldn't catch up with others. He pleaded the honest ox to give him a lift. When they arrived at the ending point, no sooner than the door of the heavenly palace was opened, the rat jumped off the ox’s back and entered. Rat became the first of the Chinese zodiac.

Are Rats Unlucky in Years of Rat?
In Chinese culture, people are considered unlucky in their zodiac year of birth. There is a saying that the Taisui (God of Age) is offended by the rat people this year; there will be misfortune even though everything is fine for rat people. Unluckiness like being ill, losing a fortune, sabotage from other people, cheating, or something crazy is likely to befall the rat people. They need to wear red underwear, or a red bracelet to keep off the evil. The birthdays for rat people this year are pretty serious.
As concerned as rats are about their fortunes, there are ways, superstitious as they may, can help.
1.Red Belt/bracelet/underwear
Red is considered magical. Chinese people have a special feeling about the color red. In one’s birth year, it’s believed that the red belt, red bracelet, and red underwear will keep the evil off. And these red things should be presents from other people. They won’t be as effective if one buys for himself.
2.Worship the “Birth Year God”
According to Taoism, each person has their Birth Year God. To gain blessings and achieve success in one’s birth year, people have to worship the Birth Year God.
3.Wear a Pi Xiu
Pi Xiu is a godly animal in ancient Chinese myth legend. It has gray and white fur, the head of a dragon, the body of a horse, four feet of a unicorn, and overall like a lion. The myth has it that the Pi Xiu can drive off the evil and bring good luck. The rat people can wear a small consecrate Pi Xiu figure in the rat years.
4.Red Insole
The folklore has it that one will tread the villains that try to block his fortune and walk towards goodness step by step.
It’s not guaranteed that doing the things above will keep you from any unluckiness. It will, however, soothe your mind.
